A genuine game-changer

If it’s going to take something pretty special to get people in Gainesville, Buford, Cumming, Duluth, Atlanta, and Athens out of their gas-powered cars and into full-electric models, that special thing may have arrived in the shape of the all-new 2022 Kia EV6. It’s hard to imagine how anyone could fail to be impressed by the way this stunning electric crossover SUV looks, but that’s only one part of what makes this new EV so special because it’s as attractive inside and as amazing to drive as it is incredible to look at from outside.

Trim levels

It’s been common in the past for totally new electric cars to come in just a single high-specification trim level. However, Kia is treating the 2022 EV6 just like any other new model by making it available right from the start with several different specifications. There are three grades of EV6 to choose from: the entry-level Light, the mid-range Wind, and the range-topping 2022 Kia EV6 GT-Line.

The entry-level EV6 Light is a rear-wheel-drive model, but the Wind and GT-Line are standard rear-wheel drive with AWD available as an option. The EV6 is a rear-drive rather than front-wheel-drive model, which is an early tell-tale sign of how this is one electric vehicle designed to be a proper driver’s car, rather than just an exercise in emissions-free mobility.

Powertrain and performance

2022 Kia EV6 powertrains and performance

It’s rare to hear words like “thrilling” used to describe the way affordable electrified vehicles drive, but it’s hard to think of a better way of describing the driving experience offered by the EV6 in any of its three available propulsion configurations. The base Light version of the 2022 Kia EV6 has a 58-kWh battery pack that provides the electric motor with enough juice to develop a very respectable 167 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque.

But the fun really starts when you get to the Wind and GT-Line versions as they get an upgrade to a larger 77.4-kWh battery pack that increases both the range and performance of the EV6. The propulsion system of rear-wheel drive Wind and GT-Line models produces 225 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque, but e-AWD models have an extra motor, and they put out 320 horsepower and 446 lb.-ft. of torque. And as long as you have the larger battery pack, the EV6 is capable of towing up to 2,300 pounds, and in its dual-motor format, it’s also capable of getting you from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds. The driving range on a full charge varies between 232 and 310 miles, depending on the specification.

Features and equipment

Cutting-edge is a term that’s often overused to describe the features found in modern vehicles, but it’s more than appropriate in the case of the EV6. You know you’re in something unique and achingly contemporary when you enter the 2022 Kia EV6 and see the dash, which is dominated by dual 12.3-inch Panoramic Connectivity Displays that the driver can configure to display more information than you are ever likely to need.

All versions of the EV6 come with wireless phone charging, five USB ports, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a rear-view monitor with Dynamic Parking Guidance, an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, dual-zone climate control, and heated front seats. Once you get above the entry-level, all versions of the EV6 get ventilated front seats, Power Onboard Generator, a 14-speaker premium Meridian sound system, and GT-Line models even come with an augmented-reality head-up display.
