What’s New for the 2018 Kia Sportage?
Ostensibly at the midpoint of its fourth production cycle with the 2018 model year, the Kia Sportage gets a few adjustments for its three trims. The base-level LX has brand-new stain-resistant cloth seat trim, plus a wider range of optional equipment. The mid-level EX has additional standard features that include blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. And the high-performance SX Turbo has the addition of an electronic parking brake.
Designed as a compact crossover SUV with seating for five, the 2018 Kia Sportage provides a total interior volume of 129.3 cubic feet, 30.7 of which is reserved as standard cargo room. For leather seat trim, a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with 2-way power lumbar support, and front-seat heating ability, you can upgrade to the EX. On the SX Turbo, Kia adds 8-way power adjustability on the front passenger seat, as well as cooling capability on both front seats.
Power on the LX and EX comes from a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4) engine, which produces 181 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. True to its name, the SX Turbo gets a 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 that churns out up to 240 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Regardless of engine, the 2018 Sportage comes with an electronically controlled 6-speed automatic transmission. Although front-wheel drive is standard, you can opt for an all-wheel-drive system. Standard equipment includes cruise control, six-speaker AM/FM/MP3 audio, a USB port and auxiliary audio jack for connecting mobile devices, complimentary SiriusXM® satellite radio service, a 5-inch touchscreen, a rearview camera, wireless technology for hands-free phone operation and audio streaming, and remote keyless entry. Added on the EX are a 7-inch touchscreen (in place of the 5-inch), Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay™ for controlling the stereo unit with your smartphone, a USB 2.1 port for charging your mobile devices, and a smart key system that comes with push-button engine start. Exclusive to the SX Turbo are 8-inch touchscreen navigation with SiriusXM® Traffic, HD Radio™, front and rear parking sensors, an auto-dimming rearview mirror for taming headlight glare behind you, HomeLink® for remote-controlling garage doors, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, and an eight-speaker 320-watt surround sound system.
For safety, the Sportage comes with four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, electronic vehicle stability control, traction control, electronic brake-force distribution, hill start assist control, downhill brake control, and six airbags. Upgrade to at least the EX to add the aforementioned blind spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert, as well as lane change assist. Exclusive to the SX Turbo are autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning system, and the aforementioned electronic parking brake.
